The Importance of a Freight Forwarder
The freight forwarder has always played an important role in commerce and international carriage of goods. Traditionally the freight forwarder was the link between the owner of the goods and the carrier, and provided forwarding or clearing services.
The forwarder acted as agent for the owner of the cargo or the carrier. With the advent of containerization, the forwarder undertook activities such cargo consolidation on his/her own account – as a principal.
In more recent years the freight forwarder has moved onto a new role in not only assisting the parties to get the goods transported, but in “undertaking” to get the goods transported by his own means of transport or making arrangements with other transport providers.
In this role the freight forwarder as a principal and not as an agent and is known by many names e.g. a NVOCC (Non-vessel Owning Common Carrier), an MTO (Multimodal Transport Operator), a logistics service provider, etc.
International Freight Forwarding can be confusing and it is important that all the correct paperwork is completed and submitted to the right authorities. Freight Forwarders will take care of all the necessary documentation and are well versed about all customs and international shipping laws so you can be sure that your shipment, large or small, will be delivered quickly and efficiently and without delay.

Learning Objective:
After the course you should be able to:
1.Preliminary advice to the exporter:
a.Explaining exporter's responsibilities / obligations under Terms of Sale (Incoterms) requested.
b.Assist in negotiating inland and ocean rates; provide ideas on optimal and most cost effective shipping alternatives.
c.Assist in determining the best way to ship i.e. - container vs. break-bulk, consolidation vs. exclusive use, conference vs. non-conference, air vs. ocean.
d.Packing / Marking recommendations.
e.Explain port functions in connection with export.
f.Advice as to what the exporter should accomplish and what the forwarder will accomplish for him.
g.Review import licenses, where applicable.
h.Recommendations regarding receiving payments for exports -- explanation of methods of payment.
i.Interpret and control Letters of Credit.
j.Advice as to possible problems may encounter: Improper packing, cheapest method of shipping not always the best, document discrepancies that can cause slow or non-payment and/or confiscation of freight in foreign port, consequences resulting from late delivery of freight and/or late documents.
k.Estimate complete Export transportation and related costs for quotes (on Proforma invoice) and L/C.
l.Advise of drawback opportunities for previously imported cargo being exported.
